The fourth edition of CHINA FOCUS has officially launched at the Edinburgh Festivals, showcasing a diverse array of eight distinguished Chinese theatre productions. Organised by the China Shanghai International Arts Festival and co-organised by Branding Shanghai, the programme offers a blend of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture, promising a rich cultural experience for festivalgoers.
This year’s lineup features a captivating selection of performances, including Wu Man at the Edinburgh International Festival, Riding Alone, Look at Them!, Forging the Swords, Hi, Sid!, Hu Opera Love Bridge, Ancient Ship, and Beautiful Earth. These productions draw from classic Chinese myths and literary masterpieces, offering a vibrant display of China’s cultural heritage while integrating Chinese and Western artistic elements.
CHINA FOCUS, which launched in 2017, aims to promote Chinese cultural heritage and theatrical excellence on the international stage. The programme highlights a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese theatre, reflecting a blend of old and new in its performances.
The official reception for CHINA FOCUS on 16 August was attended by notable figures, including representatives from the UK Department for Business and Trade, the British Council, the Scottish Government, Scottish Development International, Festivals Edinburgh, and the Chinese Consulate General in Edinburgh. Guests also enjoyed a performance of Ancient Ship by the CSIAF Youth Art Troupe following the reception.
