German sustainable smartphone maker SHIFT has announced a partnership with technology firm Thales to introduce eSIM functionality to its next-generation modular handsets. The move is expected to enhance connectivity while aligning with SHIFT’s eco-conscious design philosophy.
The new solution, developed by Thales, bridges the gap between traditional SIM cards and embedded eSIMs by offering a physical eSIM format. This allows SHIFT’s customers to insert the eSIM into a SIM slot, rather than relying on a pre-installed component soldered onto the device. Unlike standard eSIMs, which are built into the phone’s hardware, this format provides users with more flexibility while maintaining compatibility with conventional SIM cards.
SHIFT’s latest smartphones will support multiple connectivity plans, enabling users to store and switch between up to ten different profiles. This is particularly beneficial for those managing various plans for personal, business, or travel purposes.
In addition to improving functionality, the collaboration aligns with SHIFT’s commitment to sustainability. The Thales eSIM comes in a physical format made entirely from recycled materials. The EcoSIM, produced from discarded plastic found in old refrigerators, contributes to reducing electronic waste and supporting a circular economy.
Carsten Waldeck, CEO and founder of SHIFT, highlighted the importance of integrating sustainability with innovation. “At SHIFT, we believe that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. Through our partnership with Thales, we empower our customers to experience cutting-edge connectivity while staying true to our modular design philosophy and commitment to eco-conscious practices. This solution offers the flexibility of an eSIM, reducing the need for multiple physical cards, cutting down on plastic waste, and supporting more eco-friendly devices.”
Thales, a global leader in advanced technology solutions, sees the collaboration as a step towards more responsible mobile connectivity. Eva Rudin, VP of Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales, said: “We are proud to support SHIFT in transforming their smartphones with our programmable EcoSIM technology. This collaboration demonstrates how advanced connectivity solutions can align seamlessly with responsible goals. It positions SHIFT as a new player in the growing eSIM market, allowing them to test demand for eSIM-enabled smartphones while maintaining their sustainable ethos.”
SHIFT is known for producing modular smartphones that prioritise repairability and longevity, reducing electronic waste. The company’s design approach allows users to replace or upgrade components rather than discarding entire devices. With the introduction of eSIM support, SHIFT aims to further enhance its offering by reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional SIM cards.
The partnership with Thales reflects a broader trend in the mobile industry towards sustainability and flexible connectivity solutions. As more manufacturers explore eSIM adoption, SHIFT’s approach provides an alternative that balances technological advancements with environmental responsibility.
With this development, SHIFT continues to challenge the norms of smartphone manufacturing, proving that high-performance mobile connectivity can go hand in hand with sustainability.
