Swiss sailor Alan Roura, 31, is set to embark on his third consecutive Vendée Globe race, the world’s most gruelling solo sailing challenge, supported by the Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot. This year’s event, beginning at 13:02 on Sunday, November 10, in Les Sables d’Olonne, marks an emotional return for spectators after a COVID-restricted race in 2020.
In a recent interview, Roura shared his excitement, noting the event’s unique energy as the public rejoins. “The passion is stronger than ever, and the support is overwhelming,” Roura commented while wearing a limited-edition Hublot “Big Bang Unico Sailing Team” watch, a testament to the technical collaboration between Hublot and the demands of ocean racing. Over the past few weeks, around 2.5 million fans have gathered to witness the boats and sailors preparing for the race’s brutal 45,000 km journey.
Roura’s journey with Hublot began three years ago when he presented his Vendée Globe project, which the luxury brand quickly embraced, recognising in Roura a shared ethos of pushing boundaries. Hublot CEO Julien Tornare noted the brand’s maritime roots, pointing to its name, meaning “porthole,” and its commitment to advancing ocean-racing technology alongside its iconic Swiss watchmaking.
Roura, known as one of the most experienced sailors in his generation, has completed two Vendée Globe races and set a North Atlantic record. Reflecting Swiss values of precision and resilience, Roura said he aims to exceed not only his competitors but also his own past achievements. “Success isn’t something I take for granted. I am driven to keep challenging myself,” he stated.
The Vendée Globe is often called the “Everest of the Seas” due to its extreme demands, with only 200 sailors finishing the race since its founding 35 years ago. Navigating past key markers like Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn, Roura will sail unassisted around the world. His journey aligns with the endurance Hublot seeks to highlight in both its products and its brand ambassadors.
Roura anticipates challenges along the way but embraces the experience as a “fantastic human adventure.” He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his Swiss backers and the nation following his progress. “Yes, there will be hardships, but I am focusing on the joy of the voyage and sharing it with everyone supporting me,” Roura concluded.
As he faces the ocean’s trials, Roura is buoyed by Hublot’s partnership, symbolising the intersection of Swiss precision and unyielding ambition, a spirit Roura hopes to carry with him across the Vendée Globe’s waves.
