Northumbria University is set to host its annual Working Well in Healthcare event, bringing together industry leaders to discuss the future of training in the sector.

The one-day conference, taking place on 15 May 2025, will focus on experiential learning and simulated environments as tools to address workforce challenges in the NHS and beyond. It will be held both in person at the university’s City Campus in Newcastle and online, ensuring accessibility for attendees across the UK.

The event will feature a line-up of expert speakers, including Professor Paula Holt MBE DL, Senior Nursing Advisor at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Professor Graham Wynn, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education at Northumbria University, Professor Alison Machin, Head of the Department for Nursing, Midwifery and Health, and Professor John Unsworth OBE, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for Health and Life Sciences. Additional speakers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Challenging perceptions of simulated learning

A key session at the event will be a panel discussion titled ‘Myth-busting: the challenges, changes and concerns around simulated practice’, which will tackle common misconceptions surrounding simulation-based training in healthcare.

Professor John Unsworth, who is also Chair of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, said the event would provide an essential platform for discussion and knowledge-sharing at a critical time for the sector.

“The NHS is under immense pressure to grow and upskill its workforce, and innovative, digital-led training solutions are crucial,” he said.

“Northumbria University has some of the most advanced simulated learning environments in the country, helping students prepare for real-world scenarios. By using the latest simulation and virtual reality technology, we can enhance patient safety and ensure that future healthcare professionals are work-ready.”

Expanding state-of-the-art training facilities

The university already offers high-tech simulation facilities at its Clinical Skills Centre, based at Coach Lane Campus. These include a peri-operative suite, hi-fidelity mannequins capable of replicating medical conditions and procedures, and a midwifery training suite with advanced birthing mannequins.

Looking ahead, Northumbria University is investing in a multi-million-pound Centre for Health and Social Equity (CHASE), which will become a hub for research and training.

Professor Graham Wynn, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, highlighted the significance of the CHASE project:

“CHASE will harness the University’s expertise to address pressing health and social care needs across the region. With additional external funding, it will expand our simulated training facilities, making them among the best in the UK.”

Addressing workforce challenges

The Working Well in Healthcare event was first launched last year to facilitate collaboration between healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers. It aims to drive innovation in training methods and tackle key workforce challenges.

Registration for ‘Working Well in Healthcare: Transformative Experiential Learning and Simulated Environments’ is now open. Further details can be found at: Northumbria University Event Page.

What happened to Hayley Erbert?

Erbert’s startling diagnosis resulted from her unexpected confusion following a performance. A burst blood vessel created a cerebral hematoma the physicians discovered. She needed an emergency craniectomy, an operation in which portion of the skull is removed, hoping to preserve her life and thereby relieve pressure.

Emotional response of Derek Hough to the diagnosis

The diagnosis tore Derek Hough apart. Doctors cautioned Erbert about the unknown nature of surviving and the possibility of losing parts of her personality. Hough called this time terrible and life-changing, a shock that abruptly stopped their dreams and way of life.

Erbert’s Journey of Complex Recovery

The first comeback was exhausting. Erbert was under medical observation and had to deal with possible long-lasting consequences. She went through long rehabilitation and gradually rebuilt her strength. Her husband’s unflinching support got her through this crucial stage of recovery.

Reiterating Dance: Erbert’s Will

Erbert had come remarkably far by March 2024. Approved by her doctor, she started light dancing in April. She was clearly resolved to get back on the stage, driven to recover her love of dance she had believed lost.

Ballroom Comeback of Hayley Erbert on Dancing with the Stars

Erbert returned movingly to Dancing with the Stars on October 15, 2024, performing alongside Hough to Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things (Acoustic).” The emotional performance represented her resiliency and return to the dance floor, therefore marking the end of a difficult year.

Recording the Voyeur Verite Project

Under Jason Bergh’s direction, Hough and Erbert chose Voyeur Verite Presents to chronicle this trip. This piece highlights Erbert’s fortitude and their mutual resiliency, therefore providing a firsthand look into her experience. Additionally acting as an executive producer, Hough provides insight into their personal life.

Second Surgery with Implant for Reconstruction of the Skull

Erbert had more surgery in December 2023—this time for a skull implant. The implant replaced some of the skull taken out during the first operation. Hough gave updates, thanking supporters and stressing the need of community during their trip.

The Difficulties of Recovery and Maintaining Hope

Erbert struggled both physically and emotionally even with her improvement. She found strength in her love of dancing even if she had difficult days. When she thought back on her path, she owed great thanks to her family, friends, and doctors who were instrumental in her recuperation.

The Role Derek Hough Plays as a Support and Carer

Erbert’s recuperation depended on Hough’s committed caregiving. He said she was a “miracle” and praised her bravery. Sharing these events with supporters, Hough’s loyalty highlighted the strength of their relationship and their resiliency during this life-altering event.

Erbert’s Letter on the Fragility of Life

Erbert discussed the fleeting nature of life after recovery and urged others to treasure times with loved ones. Her experience greatly affected her perspective, which made her emphasis the value of family and health themes that connected with supporters and underlined her strength.

Emotional Effects of a Near-Death Event

Hough and Erbert freely talked about the emotional toll the experience took. Her survival seemed to them as a “miracle,” and it inspired fresh respect of life. This trip strengthened their love and fortitude as well as their awareness of the worth and volatility of life.

As live events are often eagerly awaited, cancellations or postponements can be hugely disappointing for fans. Recent examples include global acts such as the Foo Fighters and Chappell Roan cancelling headline festival appearances, while extreme weather in the UK led to Premier League football matches being called off due to waterlogged pitches.

In such circumstances, consumers are left questioning their rights and whether they are entitled to refunds or alternative arrangements. Liran Froind, co-founder of Ticket-Compare.com, offers advice on how ticketholders can protect themselves from financial loss and ensure they are aware of their entitlements.

Froind explains: “With so many cancellations or postponements in recent weeks, it’s natural for those with tickets for upcoming events to feel anxious. It’s crucial for consumers to know their rights so that they aren’t left out of pocket if something goes wrong.”

Event organisers are legally required to provide accurate details at the point of sale, including information about the date, time, location, and performers. If this information is found to be misleading, consumers may have grounds for a refund. This could apply, for instance, if a performer like Chappell Roan or the Foo Fighters cancels their performance at short notice. Froind notes: “Misrepresentation or false information about an event is considered a breach of contract, which means consumers could claim a refund if the event doesn’t proceed as described.”

Cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances, such as adverse weather, often result in a different outcome. The recent postponement of football matches due to extreme weather conditions illustrates the more straightforward approach when an event cannot take place on its original date. In these cases, Froind says, “Organisers are required to inform ticket holders as soon as possible and present them with options.”

If the event is rescheduled and fans are unable to attend the new date, they should be given the choice to either seek a refund or exchange their ticket. Consumers are legally entitled to request a full refund when an event is cancelled outright, unless the terms and conditions specifically state otherwise.

Froind advises consumers to pay close attention to the terms of their ticket purchase. “Most organisers have clauses in their terms and conditions that explain what happens in the event of a cancellation or postponement. Understanding this can help you determine what you’re entitled to, whether it’s a full refund or a ticket exchange for another date,” he says.

While disappointment over a missed event can be unavoidable, knowing your rights as a consumer can offer some peace of mind. Ticketholders should act quickly if they find themselves unable to attend a rescheduled event and contact the organiser to explore their options for refunds or exchanges.

E.ON has hosted an event at its Westwood Business Park headquarters in Coventry, aimed at inspiring young people, including care leavers and young carers, to explore the work experience and apprenticeship opportunities available to them. The event, organised in collaboration with Coventry City Council, sought to raise awareness of career prospects and help young people engage with potential employers.

Attendees included young people linked with the House Project for Care Leavers and the Positive Youth Foundation, organisations that support individuals who may otherwise struggle to access such opportunities. The day provided a chance for these young people to learn about the work experience placements on offer, with the hope that they might apply for apprenticeships with E.ON or Coventry Building Society when available.

The event included various activities such as CV advice, mock interviews, and talks on early career paths and apprenticeships. There were also interactive exercises designed to make participants feel comfortable, helping them build confidence throughout the day.

Robyn Ayensu, an employee of Coventry Building Society and a former care leaver, spoke about the importance of the event. Reflecting on her own experience, she said securing an apprenticeship had been a pivotal moment in her life. “Today’s event is a great way to link with young people,” she said. “Trusted organisations like the Council, House Project, and Positive Youth Foundation show young people that there are organisations out there that care about their futures and want to support them.”

Ayensu also highlighted Coventry Building Society’s supportive work environment, where values such as care, responsibility, and ambition are central to the company culture.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, praised the event as an excellent way to motivate the younger generation. He emphasised the importance of connecting young people with good local companies, particularly those involved in the expanding green energy sector. “This is a priority for our strategic energy partnership, as we work towards net-zero goals with the support of Coventry’s young people, who have a stake in addressing the greatest threat to our planet,” he said.

Ben Tuck, Social Value Manager at E.ON, reiterated the company’s commitment to Coventry through its 15-year Strategic Energy Partnership with Coventry City Council. He noted that E.ON’s involvement in the city extends beyond energy projects, encompassing initiatives aimed at fostering social and community growth. “As one of the UK’s most inclusive employers and a leading apprenticeship provider, we are honoured to host this important event. We hope it will inspire Coventry’s young people with the advice and information they need to shape their future careers,” Tuck said.

Cllr Pat Seaman, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, also praised the initiative, highlighting how events like this demonstrate the role local businesses can play in providing real opportunities to young people who might otherwise be overlooked. She expressed optimism that the collaboration between organisations like E.ON and Coventry Building Society would continue to offer meaningful support to Coventry’s youth.
