Two CrossFit gyms, one in Portsmouth, UK, and another in Portsmouth, USA, are joining forces for a unique transatlantic charity event this October. The challenge, sponsored by Concept2, will see participants from both sides of the Atlantic compete in a virtual endurance race to raise funds for veterans’ charities.
The event, set to take place from 9am on 26th October to 9am on 27th October, will feature a 24-hour marathon of rowing, skiing, cycling, and running. Members of CrossFit Choice in Portsmouth, UK, will face off against CrossFit Portsmouth Spartan Kettlebell Club (PSKC) in Portsmouth, USA, as they strive to rack up the most calories on erg machines.
Karl Thorpe, co-owner of CrossFit Choice and serving Royal Navy personnel, explained the significance of the challenge: “This transatlantic event is more than just a fitness competition. It’s a powerful reminder of how community, no matter the distance, can come together for a great cause. We’re incredibly proud to stand alongside PSKC in the USA in support of our veterans.”
The challenge aims to raise awareness and funds for two veteran support charities: the Royal British Legion in the UK and Fifty for the Fallen in the USA. Both organisations provide vital mental health and support services to veterans making the transition to civilian life.
Paul Ormston, also co-owner of CrossFit Choice and a serving Royal Navy member, added: “This event isn’t just about competition—it’s about coming together to support those who have served. CrossFit is all about community, and this challenge highlights the core values of teamwork, resilience, and giving back. We can’t wait to see the energy from both sides of the Atlantic.”
The event has also attracted sponsorship from fitness equipment manufacturer Concept2, with the winning gym set to receive a new piece of erg equipment. This adds an extra incentive for participants to give it their all during the challenge.
Participants from both gyms will take turns on rowing, skiing, cycling, and running machines, with the goal of accumulating the highest number of calories over the 24-hour period. The event is open to both gym members and non-members, encouraging as many people as possible to get involved.
In addition to the athletic competition, CrossFit Choice will provide recovery and wellness support to participants, including a sauna and cold plunge services supplied by Portasauna. Organisers hope that these facilities will help athletes push through the gruelling 24-hour challenge while promoting the importance of recovery in fitness.
Both CrossFit gyms previously held a similar virtual race, which proved to be a huge success. This year, they hope to build on that momentum by involving even more participants and raising greater funds for charity. The event is designed to introduce CrossFit to newcomers, showcasing the sport’s focus on community support and inclusivity.
CrossFit Choice is calling on the local Portsmouth community to get involved, either by participating in the challenge or supporting the event by donating to the chosen charities. The event promises to be an exciting and meaningful way to bring people together for a good cause, celebrating fitness while raising vital funds for veterans.
