Tesco, the UK’s largest grocery and general merchandise retailer, has announced a pioneering policy aimed at improving the welfare of farmed shrimp, potentially impacting the lives of over 5 billion shrimp annually.

The new welfare commitments, unveiled on 17th August 2024, mark a significant advancement in animal welfare within the seafood industry. The policy, developed in response to a campaign led by Mercy For Animals (MFA), addresses several inhumane practices associated with shrimp farming, including the controversial procedures of eyestalk ablation and ice slurry immersion. MFA had previously organised the world’s first shrimp welfare protest in London on 30th May, calling for a transition to more humane methods, such as electric stunning.

Paul Cichy, Global Campaigns Specialist at Mercy For Animals, praised Tesco’s initiative as a crucial step towards mitigating the severe suffering experienced by billions of shrimp. He stated, “Tesco’s policy is a crucial step in alleviating some of the worst cruelty that billions of shrimp endure annually. We hope this commitment from Tesco will spur other retailers to recognise the importance of adopting more sustainable practices for all animals. Mercy for Animals will continue its engagement efforts to bring more attention to the critical issue of shrimp welfare, which is often overlooked in animal welfare discussions.”

Under Tesco’s new Farmed Decapod Crustacean Welfare Policy, the company has committed to integrating more compassionate practices across the shrimp supply chain, encompassing capture, onboarding, landing, storage, and transport. The policy specifically targets two species: Penaeus vannamei (white-leg prawns) and Penaeus monodon (tiger prawns), both of which are recognised as sentient beings under the UK’s Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022.

Key elements of the policy include the implementation of 100% electric stunning for Penaeus vannamei and a complete ban on eyestalk ablation for both shrimp species by 2027. Additionally, Tesco will no longer sell live shrimp in its stores or online, further supporting its commitment to humane practices.

Tesco’s approach includes a commitment to transparency and accountability, with regular audits planned throughout their supply chain to ensure adherence to the new welfare standards. This move is seen as a significant step towards improving industry practices and sets a precedent for other major retailers.

Mercy For Animals has commended Tesco for its groundbreaking policy and is now calling on other leading retailers, such as Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Aldi, and Lidl, to adopt similar measures. Improving eye health could provide a significant economic boost to the UK, with new research revealing that better eye care could potentially add £10 billion annually to the nation’s economy. Released on World Sight Day, the study conducted by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and Professor Kevin Frick from Johns Hopkins University underscores the urgent need to focus on eye health as a component of workplace wellbeing. The research indicates that the UK stands among the top ten countries with the highest potential economic gains from improved eye health.

The report notes that avoidable sight loss costs the UK economy £10 billion each year. This includes costs related to reduced productivity and increased healthcare expenditures. It is estimated that 30% of individuals with sight loss face diminished employment opportunities, while 90% of sight loss cases are preventable with timely intervention and treatment.

Peter Holland, CEO of IAPB and spokesperson for the Love Your Eyes campaign, emphasised the economic and personal impact of sight loss. “Business leaders have made strides in addressing various aspects of workplace wellbeing, such as mental health and menopause. However, World Sight Day is an opportunity to spotlight eye health and integrate it into workplace wellness programmes,” he said.

The study highlights the growing need for eye health awareness in light of the increasing screen time associated with modern work environments. With 79% of the UK’s economic output coming from the service sector and 83% of the workforce engaged in service-related roles, proper eye care is crucial for maintaining productivity and preventing eye strain.

Globally, sight loss imposes a staggering economic burden of US$411 billion each year, according to the Lancet Global Health Commission on Global Eye Health. The report suggests that improved eye health could mitigate these costs significantly, benefiting both individuals and the broader economy.

Holland calls for businesses to adopt strategies that promote eye health, including providing access to eye care services, integrating eye health into insurance plans, and educating employees about proper eye care. “Sight loss has a profound impact on personal and professional lives, affecting not only productivity but also quality of life. It is imperative for businesses to address this issue proactively,” he added.

Michael Rogers, CEO of Starfolio, a prominent UK media company, supports the call for increased focus on eye health within workplace wellness initiatives. “Prioritising eye health is not just a corporate responsibility but an investment in the productivity and overall health of the workforce. At the forefront of this wage growth is the manufacturing sector focused on textiles, leather, and clothing. In December 2022, workers in this industry earned an average of £489.18 per week. By December 2023, this figure had risen to £549.41, marking a notable 12.31% increase—the highest of any industry surveyed.

Agricultural Sector Sees Strong Gains

Second in the rankings is the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry, which also saw substantial wage growth. Weekly earnings in this sector increased from £462.40 in December 2022 to £514.45 in December 2023, representing an 11.26% rise. This increase reflects the growing demand for sustainable practices and products in these fields.

Real Estate Activities in Third Place

The real estate activities sector came in third, with a rise in average weekly earnings from £632.48 in December 2022 to £703.64 in December 2023. This 11.25% increase highlights the sector’s resilience and the ongoing demand for property and real estate services amidst economic fluctuations.

Hospitality Industry’s Steady Growth

In fourth place, the accommodation and food service activities industry experienced a 9.99% increase in wages. Average weekly earnings climbed from £296.12 in December 2022 to £325.71 in December 2023. This growth is indicative of the sector’s recovery from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as consumer confidence and spending in hospitality continue to rise.

Metal Manufacturing Industry Rounds Out the Top Five

The manufacturing of basic metals and metal products sector also saw significant wage growth, securing the fifth spot. Weekly earnings in this industry increased from £700.15 in December 2022 to £765.37 in December 2023, a rise of 9.31%. This increase underscores the importance of metal manufacturing to the UK’s industrial landscape.

Other Notable Increases

Beyond the top five, several other industries saw noteworthy wage increases. The information and communication sector, with traditionally high earnings, experienced a 9.01% rise, with average weekly earnings growing from £1,070.36 to £1,166.77. Administrative and support service activities followed, with an 8.08% increase from £541.64 to £585.39.

The retail trade and repairs sector saw a 6.88% increase, with wages rising from £379.09 to £405.17. Public administration workers experienced a 6.49% increase in their weekly earnings, from £683.90 to £728.29. In response to this heightened interest, Authority Hacker has outlined a method to generate an additional £500 per month. Their strategy centres on building a profitable blog from scratch, a process that includes purchasing a domain name, publishing initial content, attracting free web traffic, and eventually monetising the audience.

Mark Webster, Co-Founder of Authority Hacker, explains, “Building an authority website can be one of the best ways to address the cost-of-living crisis and generate regular, monthly revenue. Although substantial upfront effort is required, the satisfaction of earning money from a website you’ve created is immense.”
